Pros and Cons of Working at Home

Posted in Personal, Work

I’ve officially been working from the comfort of my home for about a year and a half now, and I have to say that I LOVE it. If you’re considering trying to work from home, I highly recommend but it does have it’s pros and cons. Let’s start on a positive note shall we?

Pros

Zero commute. You can literally wake up and start work. No traffic jams, no long lines trying to get your morning coffee, just wake up and take a few steps into your office and you’re there.

Save Money

As previously mentioned you have no commute so saving money every month on gas is a huge plus. I maybe fill my gas tank once a month from running errands, but sometimes it’s every other month. On top of that I save money on food.

When I worked in an office it was very convenient (and expensive) to buy food from a vending machine. Plus since I was already out, why not drive somewhere and have them make my food for me? This often led to spending money on food I didn’t need to, and eating unhealthily. Now since I’ve been working at home, I’ve actually lost some weight and I save money on food since I only have access to the food I already purchased (unless of course I order delivery, but I don’t do that often).

No Pants

Seriously. You can pretty much wear anything you want when you work at home. Want to work today in a robe? Go for it! No pants? Go for it! Now of course if your job requires a webcam I wouldn’t recommend going too crazy, but not having to wear anything specific is both cost effective and pretty nice.

Cons

Socializing

When you work from home, it’s pretty much just you and your job. Even if you and your coworkers use some sort of a chat program to communicate, it can still get very lonely because it’s not the same. I love  my job, but sometimes the highlight of my day is going to Target or out to lunch just so I can see another human being face-to-face and have a 5 minute conversation with someone I can actually see.

Boredom

This kinda also goes with socializing, but I find I have moments of pure boredom. Again you are completely by yourself, so you don’t have coworkers in a near by office or cubicle to entertain you sometimes. I personally watch a lot of Netflix to help with this, makes great background noise.

Staying Focused

Sometimes it’s difficult to stay focused on work when you’re not in a normal work environment. I find I have moments where I start getting distracted by something, but I’ve learned to get myself back on task. If I continue to have trouble focusing on work, that’s usually when I take a break for lunch or go check the mail or something so I can refocus which helps a lot.

Overall working from home has it’s pros and con, but I wouldn’t want it any other way! I LOVE working at home and hope to do it for as long as possible.
