So I’ve been blogging and creating websites since I was around 12, if you’re not wanting to do the math that’s about 20 years! So over the years I feel like I’ve learned a thing or two when it comes to starting a blog and even just maintaining it, but here’s how to get started!
Step 1: Why and What?
First you need to decide why you want to start a blog and what it’s about. So why do you want to start a blog? Somewhere to keeps your thoughts? Wanting to make money doing it? Whatever the reason is, you need to also pick a topic. Typically you want to pick something you are passionate about it, whether that’s latest fashion trends, showing off the tasty meals and treats you cook in your kitchen, or your latest gaming adventures. Or cheat like me and just have a personal blog where you can talk about anything and everything haha. You don’t have to have a specific topic in mind to start a blog, your topics can change!
Step 2: Platform
Next up is figuring out what you’re wanting to use for your blog. I’m personally partial to WordPress, since I’ve used it for most of my blogging life. It’s not only user friendly, but it also has a lot of amazing free (and even paid) themes to choose from. With something like WordPress you also want to decide if you’re wanting it to be self hosted (meaning you pay for a host yourself) or host it via WordPress.com. Really that is entirely up to you, but personally I prefer self-hosted. It allows for more control over your website. Another option besides WordPress is Blogger.
Step 3: Pick A Name
Now that you’ve figured out what your blog is about and you’ve chosen a platform, it’s time to pick a name! Naming your website can be one of the hardest decisions. Sometimes when I am coming up with a website I’ll use a thesaurus and look up different words I like and find other words that mean the same thing. Sometimes even just naming your blog after yourself or whatever the topic is. Depending on what you decide to go with in terms of a platform, you’ll also need to register a domain name. I personally buy all of my domains through Namecheap and have for many, many years. You can even search there to see what’s available too, which can help you decide on a name as well!
Step 4: Hosting
So if you decide to go self-hosted you need to find a host and someone to register your domain through. I personally use and love Namecheap. I’ve used them for years for domain registration and earlier in the year I moved to their hosting plan as well. They offer a variety of plans for everyone’s budget! The plan that I use is $4.88 a month and it’s called “Stellar Plus”. If you’re unsure of how much space you’ll actually need, you can always contact theirs (or any companies’) support team and ask for assistance with picking out a plan.
Step 5: Theme
Now that you’ve completed the other steps it’s time to a pick a theme! If you’re using WordPress you can install a variety of free themes and browse their collection. If you’re wanting to purchase a theme as well, there are some amazing websites out there. I personally bought my theme from Themeforest.net. You can even design your own as well (which I did edit mine a little, and I used to make my own themes) if you have the experience with it.
Step 6: Just Do It
Once you’ve picked a topic, platform, name, hosting, and theme, now it’s time to just dive into it! Brainstorm your first post and share it. I like to even brainstorm and keep a little journal or a document on my pc (sometimes even my phone) of blog topic ideas. Good luck 🙂
